Queenstown: Shotover River Whitewater Rafting Trip

4.9 (78 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is the same river as the Shotover Jet, experienced from inside it. Challenge Rafting drives you up into Skippers Canyon, fits you with a wetsuit, and puts you down the Shotover through six grade 4-5 rapids: Aftershock, Squeeze, Toilet, Pinball and, at the end, Cascade. Between them the canyon opens out and the water goes calm enough to swim.

The signature stretch is the Oxenbridge Tunnel, 170 metres of darkness driven through solid rock by gold miners trying to divert the river. You raft through it. Nothing else on this site puts you in that part of the Shotover, and it is a long way from the 25 minutes of spins the jet boat sells.

Four hours covers the transport to the river, the gear, the safety briefing, the rafting itself and a hot shower at the end. Professional photography is included in the price, which is unusual here; most operators in this catalogue sell photos separately. Food, drinks and hotel pickup are not included.

The meeting point is the raft base at 1 Arthurs Point Road, about ten minutes from the centre of Queenstown and a few doors from the Shotover Jet base at number 3. Self-driving is possible if you contact the operator's reservations team first. The trip is listed as unsuitable for people with back problems.

What Travelers Say

I really felt my confidence improve whilst practicing manoeuvres early on and my guide Jess checking my paddle technique.

Fabulous day! Water was high and so the river was great. However, I need to also shout out to the great staff and organization. Everything was very smooth, organized and professional. I've rafted in Canada and Argentina and this was the best!

lots of fun - great balance of adrenaline rush with bigger rapids and calmer ones alternating. Coach ride to the starting point was memorable on old mining road with lots of turns and a big drop on the side.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard are the rapids?

Grade 4-5, across six named rapids, which puts this well above the Kawarau half-day's grade 2-3 introduction. If you have not rafted before and want an easier first trip, the Kawarau option on this site is the one the operator pitches at first-timers.

What is the Oxenbridge Tunnel?

A 170-metre tunnel cut through rock by gold miners to divert the Shotover, and you raft straight through the dark of it. It is the part of this trip that has no equivalent anywhere else on this site.

Where does it start, and can I drive myself?

At the raft base, 1 Arthurs Point Road, Arthurs Point, roughly ten minutes from central Queenstown and next door to the Shotover Jet base. Transport to the river is included from there. If you would rather self-drive to the base, contact Challenge Rafting's reservations team first.

Is photography included?

Yes. Professional photography services are part of what the price covers, which is worth noting because most operators in this catalogue sell photo and video packages as an extra on the day.

What is provided and what should I bring?

A wetsuit, all rafting equipment, the safety briefing, transport to the river and a hot shower afterwards are included. Bring your own food and drinks. The trip is listed as unsuitable for anyone with back problems.
